Il vincitore, con 8 voti, fu Le mani di Mr. Ottermole dell’inglese Thomas Burke, che superò di due voti La lega dei capelli rossi di Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, La lettera scarlatta di Edgar Allan Poe e Il caso vendicatore di Anthony Berkeley. Forse, nel corso del tempo, qualcuno avrà cambiato idea, ma non Ellery Queen che, a distanza di anni, ribadì il suo entusiastico giudizio con una definitiva quanto lapidaria affermazione: “Nessun racconto più bello è mai stato scritto. Punto”. E allora accingiamoci a seguire il passo stanco di Mr. Whybrow che a Londra, in una fredda sera di gennaio, sta tornando a casa. E mentre cammina, Mr. Whybrow pregusta il tè caldo che lo aspetta e immagina il fuoco che scoppietta nel camino. Non manca molto, ormai, già intravede le finestre della sua abitazione, ma non sa che poco più avanti... Benché scritto nel 1931, il racconto resta ancora oggi un modello difficile da eguagliare.
