1 | My Brilliant Career (Unabridged) | Miles Franklin |
My Brilliant Career is a 1901 novel written by “Miles Franklin”, the first of many novels by Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin (1879-1954), one of the major Australian writers of her time. The heroine, Sybylla Melvyn, is a headstrong girl growing up in rural Australia who does not appreciate her true worth. Her family was reduced to subsistence level by drought and a series of bad business decisions, so she is sent to live with her grandmother. There, she meets but rejects a wealthy suitor, Harold Beecham, as she refused to believe he could really love her. The book was made into a movie in 1979, directed by Gillian Armstrong and starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. |
